March Arts Events in Mountainair


Mountain Arts on Broadway is hosting the following events this month. All activities are held at 122 East Broadway Ave. (US Rt. 60) at Ross Ave. in Mountainair unless otherwise noted.

Ongoing Classes at the Art Center:

Mondays
Yoga Classes- 9:30 to 11 am. By Ellen Ashbrook, Physical Therapist and Yoga Teacher. This is a method of yoga that helps you align your body, stabilize joints, strengthen muscles, and increase flexibility safely. Current session ends March 4. A make-up session and session open to anyone will be on March 11 ($5.00 charge). A second session on Monday evenings will begin March 25. Both sessions are currently full. Call 505-384-5442 to be put on a waiting list. No class on March 18.

Speak Spanish- Eat Lunch (Habla Espanol-Almuerza)- 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Bring your own lunch. Everyone is welcome, including beginners. For more information, contact Tomas Wolff: wolff.clayworks@gmail.com or 505-847-2444.

Wednesdays
Open Studio-Clay and Mosaics- 10 am to 1 pm. Tomás Wolff, 505-847-2444, conducts this class. $10 for art council members, $15 per class for nonmembers.

Community Mural Project- 11 am to 3 pm. Danielle Norris Gardner, project director and artist, continues working on the east wall of the art center. New mural project on Maria de Agreda will be starting.

Saturdays

Children’s and Families’ Clay Handbuilding- 9:30 to 11 am. Tomás Wolff, 505-847-2444, conducts this class. Free, funded by Manzano Mountain Art Council.

ICreate Musical Theatre- 3:00-4:30 pm. Music classes for children. For more information, contact Lenora Romero: 505-847-2419.

One-Time Classes at the Art Center:

March 2: “Rusting” Workshop, at Mountain Arts on Broadway. This is the second session of a two part workshop and participants need to have been in the first session. Celeste Simon offers this workshop/exploration in the art of “iron oxide” transfer also called “rusting.” This process works on a variety of papers and fabrics for image makers, fiber artists and novelty seekers. March 3, 5:00 pm:  Socrates Café Potluck. Join in a community sharing of ideas and topics chosen by the participants and following an agenda that allows for open and respectful discussion. Bring a dish to share.

March 9, 9:30-3:30:  “Pysanka,” the Delicate Art of Ukrainian Egg Decorating, Jane Chevalier, Artist. Cost for the class is $55. Class is limited to 10 students. Bring two white, RAW, smooth, room-temperature eggs for your project, your brown-bag lunch, and a small table lamp and lighted magnifier if you have it. All other supplies (water-based dyes, bees wax, polyurethane sealer, etc.) will be provided by the instructor. For more information call Jane Chevalier at 505-859-9124.

March 17, 2 pm:  “Fr. Genorimo de la Llana”- Francisco Sisneros will relay the story of the Franciscan priest who came from Mexico City to Quarai in the 17th century. Presented in collaboration with Salinas Missions National Monument. Free admission.

March 23, 10 am to 1 pm:  Sculpting Small Sculptures with Natural Fibers. This workshop with Samantha Kay Baumgartner creates small figures using unspun wool and other fibers. For more information contact Art Center Director, Kent Potter, 847-0295.
