MOUNTAIN ARTS ON BROADWAY CALENDAR FOR FEBRUARY


Ongoing Classes at the Art Center at 122 East Broadway Ave. (US Rt. 60) at Ross Ave. in Mountainair:

MONDAYS
Yoga Classes-9:30 to 11 am. By Ellen Ashbrook, Physical Therapist and Yoga Teacher. This is a method of yoga that helps you align your body, stabilize joints, strengthen muscles, and increase flexibility safely. You do not need to have taken yoga before. Call ahead: 505-384-5442.

Speak Spanish- Eat Lunch (Habla Espanol-Almuerza)- 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Bring your own lunch. Everyone is welcome, including beginners. For more information, contact Tomas Wolff: wolff.clayworks@gmail.com or 505-847-2444.

WEDNESDAYS
Open Studio-Clay and Mosaics- 10 am to 1 pm. Tomás Wolff, 505-847-2444, conducts this class. $10 for art council members, $15 per class for nonmembers.

Community Mural Project- 10 am to 1 pm. Danielle Norris Gardner, project director and artist, works on the east wall of the art center. Volunteers and plywood, at least ¼ inch thick and 2 ft. by 2 ft., are still needed.

SATURDAYS
Children’s and Families’ Clay Handbuilding- 9:30 to 11 am. Tomás Wolff, 505-847-2444, conducts this class. Free, funded by Manzano Mountain Art Council.

FEBURARY ONE-TIME CLASSES AT THE CENTER
February 17, 3-4:30 pm- “Creative Clichés- Horsing Around With Language,” at Mountain Arts on Broadway, by Joan Bybee, retired UNM Distinguished Professor. By examining the creative use of language in public media, we begin to understand the multiple ways meaning is conveyed and how meaning can change over time. Free to the public.

February 23 & March 2- “Rusting” Workshop, at Mountain Arts on Broadway. Celeste Simon offers this workshop/exploration in the art of “iron oxide” transfer also called “rusting.” This process works on a variety of papers and fabrics for image makers, fiber artists and novelty seekers. Workshops are 2 to 3 hours on two consecutive Saturdays in order for the process to take shape and explore potential uses. The two-session workshop cost is $50. Limited to 10 participants. February 25 deadline for “Pysanka,”the Delicate Art of Ukrainian Egg Decorating. The class by Jane Chevalier will meet March 9, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm at Mountain Arts on Broadway. Cost for the class is $55 and must be paid by February 25. Mail to PO Box 110, Belen, NM 87002. Class is limited to 10 students. Bring two white, RAW, smooth, room-temperature eggs for your project, your brown-bag lunch, and a small table lamp and lighted magnifier if you have it. February 8, 1-7 pm- “For the Love of HeArt” opening, Enchanted Raven Gallery, 311 West Broadway. Over a dozen Mountainair artists have produced this collection of art to celebrate Valentine’s Day to raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Association. February 9, Noon-Follow-up Meeting on Maria de Agreda Mural Project, at Mountain Arts on Broadway. Artists and volunteers are encouraged to bring their ideas and sketches to set parameters for the community mural that will go on the Abo Trading Co. west wall.

February 24, 2 pm- Sweet Retreat, at Mountain Arts on Broadway. This is Manzano Mountain Art Council’s annual community planning meeting. Bring your ideas for the future and we’ll supply the treats. Writers Contest- Deadline is March 9. Estancia Valley Writers Group and the Moriarty Library is accepting submissions for the 4th annual community writing context.
