Spend Independence Day along the Salt Missions Trail Scenic Byway, and choose from a variety of activities, or combine them to fit your interests and time frame!
Start the day with an old-fashioned Fourth of July Parade at 9 a.m. in Moriarty. Stay there for music, dunk tank, jumpers and barbecue at Crossley Park or head to Estancia for a fishing contest at Arthur Park, with free musical entertainment and prizes for the shortest, longest, and heaviest fish. Stick around for the volleyball tournament at 1 p.m. and the horseshoe tournament at 2 p.m., or head to Mountainair, where festivities start at 2 p.m. and include pie baking contests for the adults and cakecup contests for the kids.
Stay in Mountainair for the Mountainair Outlaw Barbecue at Dr. Saul Community Center, followed by the poker tournament and outlaw lookalike contest from 6 to 10 p.m. (The poker tournament has a $300 prize!). Or head back to Moriarty to set off your personal fireworks safely and legally at Crossley Park under the eyes of the Fire Department.
If you’re looking for something to do the following weekend, come on back on Saturday, July 7 for
Mountainair’s Firecracker Jubilee parade starting at 9:30 a.m. Stay for the car show at the Salinas National Monument and the Mountainair Maurader Mud Bog at Chavez Memorial Park, or head to Edgewood’s Arts in the Park at the Edgewood Multi-Purpose Field from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Or spend the day at (or come back on Sunday for) the Rodeo at Moriarty’s Heritage Rodeo Arena!
